Circularity in Waste Management
A waste-management model built for hill towns, developed with Palampur Municipal Corporation and three NGOs.
Context
Waste management systems designed for the plains do not work in hill towns. There is less flat land, transport costs more, and municipal budgets are small. Hill towns need a model designed for their own terrain and economics.
HITA’s role
HITA advises Palampur Municipal Corporation and three NGOs who are building such a model. It combines nature-based methods, appropriate technology, and business arrangements that can attract investment. Residents are involved throughout, not just consulted at the end.
The approach
- Nature-based handling of organic waste, suited to mountain conditions
- Technology only where it fits hill-town scale and budgets
- Business arrangements so the model pays for itself after the grants end
- Residents involved in running the system, not just using it
Outcomes and status
The model is being developed now with the Municipal Corporation and partner NGOs. The goal is a working template that other Himalayan towns can adopt through their own municipal programmes.
